6 reasons
to visit the azores

The Azores archipelago, made up of 9 different volcanic islands, sits 750 miles west of Lisbon, Portugal in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. These islands are incredibly special and one of Europe’s best kept secrets.

Each island is unique. In the Azores, you'll find stunning scenery, enjoy fresh seafood, interact with friendly locals, experience dramatic sunrises & sunsets, explore some of the most stunning hiking trails and quickly embrace the easy-going way of the Azorean culture.

The beauty of the Azores is overwhelming and unlike anywhere else in the world.

1. exceptional SCeNERY &
off-the-beaten path hiking

The Azores are breathtakingly beautiful. Hop from island to island, discovering the gorgeous Azorean landscapes, interesting culture and history. During your hikes, you'll have stunning views full of hydrangea hedges, verdant vineyards, dramatic coastline, rugged volcanoes, lush forests and charming villages. Walk along quiet trails above turquoise lakes and around the famous Sete Cidades. For the adventurous, trek up to the top of Mount Pico (Portugal’s tallest mountain, sitting at 7,713ft) where you’ll have magnificent views across to the island of Faial and as far as São Jorge Island.

2. local seafood & wine

Our trips aren't just about the hiking. For us at Pathways, traveling is all about the people you meet throughout your journey. From learning about the unique method of wine making on Pico Island (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) as you walk through vineyards that grow out of black lava to tasting all sorts of seafood from local, authentic restaurants, you'll quickly realize that good food & community are at the heart of every Pathways trip.

3. the WATER - ocean, lakes & hot springs

In the Azores, you’ll find lots of water. The lakes here all look different and you’ll find blue, green and even black lakes. These lakes that you hike around offer wonderful views. The ocean is clean and clear and provides many opportunities for cooling off after a day on the trail. If you prefer not to swim, just sitting along the rocks on the rugged coastline and watching the waves crash against the black rocks or sandy beaches provides a nice activity. Finally, the Azores’ volcanic landscapes and natural geothermal hot springs make the islands a natural pick for a wellness getaway.

4. Mount Pico

Hiking to the top of Mount Pico (nearly 8,000 feet and Portugal’s tallest mountain, a dormant volcano), you’ll have magnificent views to the island of Faial and as far as São Jorge Island. The trek is strenuous but well worth the effort. The terrain is rugged and you are above treeline the entire way. You’ll walk on all different types of rock formations from huge lava flows that look like oversized ribbon candy to sharp, spiked volcanic rock and smaller volcanic craters. A unique trek, hiking Mt. Pico is a must.

5. HANDPICKED BOUTIQUE
LODGING

Where you stay on any Pathways trip is more than where you sleep. We take care to select special, boutique accommodations that will allow you to have a unique experience and help you connect more deeply to the local culture and cuisine of the places you're visiting.
